‘A Dress’ — the first Belarusian feminist video

The special project of 34mag.net  — ‘Piarshak’ presents a documentary project A Dress, called by the authors as the first Belarusian feminist video.

Authors of the video: Iryna Novik, Kseniya Pazhydaeva, Natallia Aksianevich, Tatsiana Siatsko, Vera Pakhay, Tatsiana Bulka, Katsiaryna Buyko, Darya Sapranetskaya, Natalia Holava, Aliaksandra Ihnatovich. The project leaders: Natalia Holava, Aliaksandra Ihnatovich.

The creators of A Dress avoid calling their work a ‘movie’. Instead, they use words ‘video’, ‘project’, ‘essay’ or ‘research’. Nevertheless, this work was made with quality and honesty, and it seems to fully match the authors’ objective — to show ‘a single’ story of the Belarusian woman, regardless of age, experience and social context. Girl from an orphanage, mother of a large family, business lady, social activist… The authors managed to talk frankly to their heroines, with no embellishments and make-up. To talk ‘on the field’ — in a bedroom, kitchen, at work. This is not a set of interviews, but rather fragments of one endless and always topical conversation about life, men, children, fate and love.

‘This is a video essay on how the social ‘outfit’ helps us to pass the real for the desired, turning alternately into a carnival dress and a restraint jacket’, — say the authors of A Dress.
